Providing Safe Gynecomastia Treatment
Gynecomastia is a common disorder of the endocrine system. Its symptoms include a non-cancerous increase in the size of male breast tissue, which can often lead to psychological distress. It can be caused by weight gain, hormonal imbalances, or taking certain medications. Most cases resolve themselves in two years without gynecomastia treatment. However, for people whose conditions never disappear, they may seek peace of mind by pursuing a surgical treatment for the condition.
Why Get Gynecomastia Treatment?
Most cases of gynecomastia are non-threatening. However, many men can find the development of breast tissue distressing. Weight loss can sometimes help reduce the appearance of male breasts for some men. However, for others, excess glandular tissue can still be an issue.
Some decide their own mental health and well-being requires male breast reduction. After the surgery, patients often say they feel an increase in self-confidence.
How Does It Work?
Gynecomastia surgery can be performed with excision, liposuction, or a combination of both. Specifically, the procedure takes relatively little time and includes local anesthesia. A small incision is made on each side of the chest.
Depending on your case, incisions may also be located along the portion of the edge of the areola or in the armpit. Through these cuts, your surgeon will remove excess fat and/or glandular tissue. He or she will also sculpt a new chest contour that looks natural to your body.
More severe cases might require surgical tissue excision to achieve the best results. Additionally, those who have stretched, sagging skin around the breast area will usually require this approach. It is generally an outpatient procedure using general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation.
Recovery will take a week or two, during which you may feel soreness and experience swelling. You may also need to wear a compression garment to minimize the swelling and help support healing. You won’t be able to exercise vigorously for about three weeks, but many men can return to work or school within a few days. Your surgeon will provide you with specific details about your cosmetic surgery recovery.
