Arm lift surgery (also known as brachioplasty) is a cosmetic procedure that improves the contour of a person’s arms, reducing their circumference and eradicating excess tissue.
Excess skin and fat may collect in different areas of your body after weight fluctuations, often leaving an unsightly “bat wing” below the upper arms. The arm lift can remove this problem, creating slimmer arms with tighter skin.
Indications for Arm Lift Surgery
Good candidates for arm lift surgery meet the following criteria:
- Loose skin on upper arms
- Fat deposits in upper arms
- Non-smoker
- Capable of understanding risks, including visible scars

How Brachioplasty Works
This surgery will require about 1 to 2 hours in the operating room. An arm lift is typically performed as an outpatient procedure under local or general anesthesia.
In some cases, liposuction alone can create the desired improvement. Most patients however, will require skin removal as well. An incision travels in the inner part of your arm, from the armpit area toward the elbow. Skin is removed and sutures are put in place to close the incisions and maintain the new shape.
After Your Arm Lift
After surgery, your arms will be wrapped in tape and a special compression garment. During recovery from your arm lift, you will need to keep the arms elevated to minimize swelling. Dr. Heir can instruct you on how to do this. Total recovery time is about 2 to 4 weeks. Once healing is complete, the incision scar will fade and flatten out, but it will always be visible.
