Social media websites, the media, and the beauty industry have all shown signs that a curvy figure is in vogue again.

Cosmetic surgeons, noticing this evolution in beauty perception, have developed procedures to meet the desires of patients who want a more voluptuous figure.

RealSelf.com, a website where patients and surgeons share information about cosmetic procedures, found that searches related to butt augmentation rose dramatically in 2011 – increasing 39 percent. They say it’s the “fastest moving topic on the site in terms of overall consumer interest.”

With the rise of procedures like the Brazilian butt lift, in which a patient’s own fat is transferred to enhance the shape and size of the buttocks, women are looking to enhance other areas as well.

Is Thigh Augmentation the Next Trend for Curves?

A recent study in the American Journal of Cosmetic Surgery explored thigh augmentation, a procedure that uses a custom implant. “Breasts are getting bigger, buttocks are getting fuller, and there is increasing demand for a fuller, more curvaceous look to the thighs,” report the authors.

During their study, 18 women received the implants to achieve a fuller appearance in the thighs. The procedure involves surgical insertion of a custom-made lateral thigh prosthesis, which enhances the curves of the lateral thigh area.

The authors reported high patient satisfaction. There were no major complications associated with the procedure during the study, and they found that implants helped women achieve a fuller look in the thigh.

Realistically, there are probably more women looking for less volume on their thighs. For them, a thigh lift might be the right procedure. A thigh lift reshapes the contour of the inner and outer thighs by removing excess skin. In some cases, a limited amount of fat is removed with liposuction.

Traditional Procedures for Enhancing Curves

Some of the most popular procedures have always been about enhancing a patient’s curves and contours. For example, many women who are dissatisfied with the size, shape and fullness of their breasts often turn to breast augmentation with saline or silicone implants.

Other curve-enhancing procedures include buttock augmentation with implants, calf augmentation and pectoral augmentation.

laser tattoo removal procedureLaser tattoo removal procedures have grown in popularity in recent years, according to ModernMedicine.

Over the past five years, the revenue generated from laser tattoo removal procedures has risen more than 20%, based on market analysis. Laser tattoo removal procedures now generate more than $65 million annually—a number that analysts say will grow over the coming years.

But why are so many people turning to laser tattoo removal procedures, especially when the popularity of tattoos continues to rise?

Analysts posit that several factors have caused the increase in the number of patients seeking laser tattoo removal procedures, ranging from unemployment to the availability of tattoo removal technology.

Though unemployment continues to rise in the US, those with tattoos who find themselves unemployed may seek laser tattoo removal procedures as a way to make themselves more hirable.

The prevalence of tattoo removal technology may have also contributed to the rise in laser tattoo removal procedures in recent years. Since patients know they will have the option of removing the tattoo later in life, they may be more likely to get one, even if they don’t feel it be for life.

new treatments for skin cancerTwo new treatments for skin cancer are being developed and may soon be available to patients.

These new treatments for skin cancer both target basal cell carcinoma, which is the most common type of skin cancer. This type of cancer is brought on by exposure to UV rays, either from the sun or tanning beds. It can account for about 80% of all skin cancer cases.

The first of the new treatments for skin cancer is an oral medication that has already gained FDA approval and should be available in specialty pharmacies soon.

Erivedge, when taken once daily, can prevent a basal cell carcinoma from continuing to grow, according to WebMD.

In a study of nearly one hundred patients, Erivedge was shown to shrink 30% of metastatic tumors, and to shrink or eliminate 43% of locally advanced cancers.

The second of the new treatments for skin cancer is a topical application that researchers say may be best for skin cancer tumors on the face, according to The Telegraph.

Most patients who have tumors develop on their faces seek out alternatives to surgery, which can lave scarring or other disfiguring appearances. This new cream, when applied to the surface of the skin, irradiates the skin and causes the tumor to shrink. Success has been seen in a majority of cases—up to 95%.

If made available, this topical treatment would add another option for patients seeking treatment for basal cell carcinomas.

The best way to avoid skin cancer, however, is to limit sun exposure. You should also email Sacramento cosmetic surgeon Dr. Heir and ask about skin care products to protect your skin.

multiple cosmetic surgeriesThe idea of undergoing multiple cosmetic surgeries simultaneously is becoming more commonplace, according to Cosmetic Surgery Times.

Dr. Samir Pancholi, a Las Vegas cosmetic surgeon, says that he often performs breast augmentation and breast lift surgery in the same session and liposuction with fat grafting techniques when performing the Brazilian butt lift.

Breast Surgeries

Patients who have lost the shape and fullness of their breasts, such as massive weight loss patients and postpartum women, are often good candidates for a combination of a breast lift and breast implants.

The breast lift, also known as mastopexy, results in a more ideal positioning of the nipple and breast, but it does not adequately address the lack of fullness of the breast in those patients, Dr. Pancholi says.

“In order to achieve a more voluptuous-looking breast…I often combine a mastopexy with breast implant surgery. The breasts are not only higher up but also have a fullness to them because of the implant,” he says.

Buttock Enhancements

By combining liposuction with fat grafting techniques when performing a Brazilian butt lift, the rounded shape of the buttocks can become more enhanced.

Dr. Pancholi says he typically performs liposuction to remove fat at the waist and upper and lower back, which causes a slight hollowing of the area and results in an accentuated curve of the buttocks. Then for a more enhanced curving effect, he takes the fat harvested during liposuction and injects it into the buttocks.

Benefits of Combination Procedures

In the past, patients might have had one breast surgery and then had the other six months later, but combining them can have benefits.

“Combining the two makes much more sense in terms of having one surgery, one recovery, reduced cost and achieving the final result without a second surgery,” according to Dr. Pancholi.

There are other areas of the body where surgeons are performing multiple procedures at one time. The New York Times recently reported that a California surgeon has combined eyelid surgery and a brow lift to create an “All-in-One Eye Lid and Brow.”

best cosmetic surgery proceduresOne noted surgeon has published results of his review of nearly 100 clinical trials and research studies, aiming to find the best cosmetic surgery procedures, according to Northwestern University.

Though the term “best cosmetic surgery procedures” may seem subjective, hundreds, if not thousands, of research studies and trials are conducted each year on procedures and non-surgical treatments. Researchers are often on the lookout for treatments that provide optimal results, with minimal side effects for the patient. The better the results of the study, the more likely the product or treatment may be included among the best cosmetic surgery procedures.

In his review of 98 studies, Dr. Murad Alam of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and surgeon at Northwestern Memorial Hospital found the best cosmetic surgery procedures, based on his research.

Botox and other botulinum toxin-based injectables:

Dr. Alam said that based on the two decades of research and findings on Botox-like treatments, they are safe and effective for patients to use.

Tumescent Liposuction:

When tumescent liposuction is performed, special fluids that are used help the surgeon to safely remove fat cells. Dr. Alam added that tumescent liposuction minimizes the chance for excessive bleeding, improving the patient’s comfort and overall health and safety.

Dr. Alam looked into additional treatments, some of which are relatively new on the market. While he found that treatments that freeze fat or shrink fat with laser light, and treatments that tighten skin are safe for use and produce results, he was not able to confirm the long-term benefits of each treatment.

To find the best cosmetic surgery procedures for you, Alam suggests talking it over with your surgeon and confirming what will best meet your needs.
